Frazier joins ICC crew

Van Buren senior Zaiyah Frazier took the opportunity given to her.

Frazier signed with the Independence Community College during a ceremony on Monday, May 7, 2018, at the Clair Bates Arena.

“It’s very exciting,” said Frazier. “I am a little nervous but definitely looking forward to the opportunity to go to school and play basketball as well. Using basketball to pursue a degree has always been the goal.”

Frazier was a guard/forward for the Lady Pointers but could play multiple positions as needed. She averaged five points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal per game. The Lady Pointers finished the 2017-18 campaign 18-11 overall and reached the second round of the Class 7A state tournament. Van Buren qualified and won at least one game in each of Frazier’s three seasons at the high school.

“We are very excited and proud for Zaiyah with her opportunity to continue her education and her basketball career with a program which has a track record of success on and off the floor,” said Van Buren coach Chris Bryant. “Zaiyah’s ability to play basically four positions on the floor made her an attractive player for ICC. She has been a great teammate. We look forward to following and supporting her as she begins this journey.”

ICC is in Independence, Kan., and a member of the Jayhawk Conference. The Pirates finished 26-7 last season and advanced to the finals of the Region IV tournament.

“Zaiyah plays well with others,” said ICC coach Leslie Crane, who will begin her sixth year as head coach for the Pirates next season. “The versatility she brings on the floor combined with the connection she and our players made off the floor makes her a great fit for our program.”
