The Van Buren Pointers opened their golf season on Monday with a win.

The Pointers fired off a 310 while Alma turned in a 324 at River Valley Golf in Dyer.

Payton Wahman led all the golfers with a 75 and Joe Hamby had a 77. Peyton Stell added a 78 and Cole Matthews turned in an 80.

Christian Stahler paced Alma with a 78. Parker Edwards, Paul Gambil and Tanner Bright each added an 82.

Cade Wallace fired off a 95 for the Pointers and both Devin Moore and Luke Whitlow turned in a 96.

Nathan Corder added a 90 for Alma while teammates Keesler Nye and Kade Wood contributed a 91 and 94 respectively.

Van Buren’s JV squad faces Northside on Aug. 18 at Deer Trails Golf Course at Fort Chaffee. The varsity squad’s next match is Aug. 22 at Eagle Crest against Southside, while the JV team will square off with Alma’s JV team.

“We didn’t graduate one young man from last year, so I expect improvement over last year’s good record,” said coach Randy Bagwell. “We lost one lady golf, but the two returning have had a good off-season and I also expect a big season from them.”
