First-year Van Buren volleyball coach Brent Reeves was happy with the way his team responded in the fourth set of Thursday’s 3-1 win over Heritage.

After nearly pulling out an impossible win in the third game, Van Buren showed its experience in a dominating fourth set as the Lady Pointers beat the War Eagles, 25-17, 25-19, 23-25, 25-13 in 7A-West play.

"That fourth game, they came back focused," Reeves said. "During the timeout, you could tell they really ready to play. I thought they stayed focused. I think it was 17-to-11 and they were really covering and really playing to win."

Sophomore Alex Dupree played especially well with a team-high 14 kills. Bekah Olienyk, who finished off the Lady War Eagles in the second set, had 11 kills, and Hattie Morrison had nine kills.

Senior Emilee Aaron was solid on the back row, finishing with four kills.

"I thought she really had some good passes," Reeves said. "Sometimes you don't remember the passes, you remember the kills. But she set us up really well."

The Lady Pointers, who improved to 2-1 in the league, pulled away in the first two sets before falling behind 21-12 in the third set.

Van Buren fought to within 23-20 after back-to-back aces from Morrison.

Then, after Dupree's ace tied the game at 23, a service error and one final hit from Heritage gave the Lady War Eagles (0-3 in the 7A-West) a win.

Hope Van Gremp led Heritage with 10 kills. Shanice Erby had 12 digs for coach Lindsey Lays' squad.

Van Buren, however, was too tough in the final set.

Morrison's kill made it 6-2 early, and Aaron's block and another kill by Morrison extended the Lady Pointers' lead to 19-10.

Caroline Davis finished with 18 assists for Van Buren, and Mikelle Porter dished out 15 assists.
