Van Buren did everything it needed to do to sweep Springdale in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

The Pointers won eight of the nine matches and the Lady Pointers took seven wins including the No. 1 singles match between Allison Lemley and Springdale’s Brittany Chue. Lemley won 6-1, 6-0. Lauren Cervantes took the No. 2 singles for Van Buren as she defeated Destiny Soltero, 6-0, 6-1.


“It was a great job by Allison. The girl she played was quite a little hustler,” said coach Brandy Mosby. “Lauren just got on the court and got this done.”

Joana Maldonado, Hattie Morrison, and Lexi Blasingame each won their matches. Maldonado was pushed to a 9-7 set by Ely Gonzalez. Morrison and Blasingame each won their set, 8-6.

“Joana did a good job not losing her focus on the court even though it was the last match of the night. She held it together, kept up with the score and got the win,” Mosby said. “Hattie saw some of the same complications on the court. A parent even tried to intervene on the score, which is forbidden, but Hattie stood her ground and won. It was a great match.”

Blasingame was challenged as she faced Paige Wright, a new tennis player for Springdale. Wright was recruited from the Bulldog softball team to play tennis this season.

“(Paige) is very strong and when she hits the ball in… it is tough to hit it back,” said Mosby. “Lexi wasn’t trying to match her power swings. She just blocked the ball with enough angle to hit it down and right over the net. Callie Ables had the sole singles loss for Van Buren and Alyssa Kroth won, but it was not counted toward the team’s total.

Betsy Corona and Ables rallied to win their doubles match, 3-6, 7-5, 12-10. Morrison and Lemley teamed up for the first time this season and won their doubles match, 8-0. Blasingame and Alyssa Seewald lost their doubles match in three sets.

Jay Bell rallied to defeat Angel Lopez in the No. 2 singles match, 2-6, 7-5, 11-9. The rest of the team easily won their contests as Kyle Porter, TJ Saniseng, Justin Deuley, Abel Diaz and Len Huang posted wins. Bryan Bell had the sole loss, in the No. 1 singles, for the Pointers.


“Bryan played really well and he just keeps getting better and better,” Mosby said. “Jay just didn’t give up in his match and rest of the team did a great job.”

Porter and Saniseng won the No. 1 doubles with a sounding 6-0, 6-0 sets. Diaz and Huang moved up to the No. 2 doubles spot in the match against Springdale. The duo had to battle through a rally by Sebastian Frazier and Jae Stewart but prevailed in the decisive third set, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7.

“Kyle and TJ played without many mistakes,” Mosby said. “I have been gradually working Len and Able to the No. 2 spot since that is where they will be playing in the conference tournament next week.”

Bryan Bell and Jay Bell won their doubles match, 8-0.
